How to choose a hamster

Hamsters - small animals, furry, silky and quiet are pleasant pets and do not require special care. If you decide to purchase yourself one or more hamsters, here are some steps that you should keep in mind when you go shopping.

1 Before buying a hamster get ready to receive it. Buy all the accessories necessary for it , so that when you bring it home everything is prepared.

2 Go to a local pet shop or a breeder. Once there check carefully the place where animals are kept. If the place is dirty and the cage is not cleaned regularly, you should go to another store.

3 Ask the seller or breeder from whom you buy, how old is the hamster. It is advisable to buy one aged 4 to 8 weeks. At this age your hamster will adapt more easily to their new surroundings.

4 Look carefully at all hamsters from that store and do not rush to choose at random. Even if you were thinking to buy a brown one, it is possible to see another one you like more. Also indicated that at this time is to watch their activity. The best thing would be to opt for an active hamster and not one that sits in a corner scared.

5 If you're thinking about getting more hamsters, ask the seller how they get along. And then check those you want to buy, right there in the shop, to see if there were injuries caused by bites. If such injuries exist they cannot tolerate eachother, and you shouldn't buy them.

6 Do not forget to check that the hamsters have fur that is clean, shiny and silky, and also that they have no wounds. Many times when they fight, they can break their ears because they are very thin and fragile, and a clean and silky fur indicates that the hamster is healthy. Also do not forget to check the eyes. If they weep, the hamster may have a disease. Even if the one you chose does not have any specific signs, but the ones next to him show these signs, chances are that your hamster might be the bearer of that virus.

Tips:

Buy a plastic transport cage. Most of the cardboard cages provided by Pet shops are chewed up by the time you get him home. The cage will also be useful during trips or visits to the veterinarian.
